I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some incredible places across the globe and Peru is among the most spectacular so far. The trek through the Cordillera Blanca was simply amazing and nicely paced for someone in moderate to good physical shape. Our guides were well prepared and very sensitive to our needs, and the meals were simply fabulous! Our journey took us through pastoral land with cattle, sheep or llamas grazing along the trail, and fertile, terraced agricultural land that reminded me of the Tuscan countryside. There were powerful rivers and calm glacial lakes. We camped on top of a bluff, across from a mountaintop glacier that creaked, cracked and sent the occasional boulders of ice and snow plummeting down the mountain. The colors of blue within the ice were something I’d previously only seen in pictures.

Along with the spectacular scenery, we walked through remote villages whose people, young and old, enthusiastically greeted us with shouts of hello as we passed through. Their lives are difficult and yet they are truly some of the happiest and most contented people I’ve ever met. They have little in terms of physical possessions but they have strong families and a sense of community which nourishes their spirit. They are beautiful in every sense of the word and reminded me of how much I have to be grateful for each day.

My journey and experiences were more than I expected and certainly more than I could express in a few words but suffice it to say this experience has enriched my life. If you can do this trek, go, travel, experience – you won’t regret it!
