Newfoundland | Maritime Hiking and Kayaking Multi-Adventure
Backpack & Kayak the Coast • June 25 – July 4, 2010
Trip Difficulty and Training: Level III (Get information about Levels.)
The East Coast Trail is considered by many to be the finest coastal trail in the world, and on any given day you can see spectacular rock formations, countless shorebirds, whales, otters, and icebergs from the Arctic as you hike along the easternmost edge of the North America. Experience the beauty and raw power of the North Atlantic while seated in a kayak, and the thrill of a Zodiac whale tour. Legendary shipwrecks, pirates, and stories abound with scenery and people you’ll never forget.
Our adventure begins in St. John’s, the rollicking capital which has a feel more like a European colonial outpost and is steeped in history and maritime culture. After two nights here we’ll transfer to our secluded and private B & B in historic Bay Bulls, where we’ll spend a day sea kayaking the North Atlantic and take a Zodiac boat tour in search of whales. Afterwards we’ll hit the trail and backpack for three days on the most scenic sections of the fabled East Coast Trail before returning to St. John’s in time for the Canada Day celebrations!
See where present day North America began as you immerse yourself in the culture of people whose ancestors settled here over 500 years ago and are very much a culture unto their own. This is Newfoundland, the far east of the west.
Please note our 2 night/3 days on the East Coast Trail are backpacking, and participants will be need to carry personal clothing/gear as well as group equipment. (Approximately 25-30 pounds total.)
