Day 3

Following breakfast we board our bus for the 3 hour drive to Landmannalaugur. Upon arriving we’ll check into our mountain hut and relax as we await tomorrow’s trek.

Day 4

Our first day on the trail takes us past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges. Hiking between the bizarre, seemingly unnatural rock structures of the Brennisteinsalda lava flow, we'll come across geothermal activity in the form of steaming vents and hot springs. Here the rock is richly colored and we'll ascend for most of the day and may even cross snowfields left from the long Icelandic winter. It will be worth the climb to the plateau of Hraftninnusker for stunning views over the highlands and glaciers. Overnight at Hrafntinnusker Hut.

Elevation: 1,762 ft. or 537 m.     Walk approximately 5 hours (7.5 miles or 12 km.)

line

Day 5

From Hrafntinnusker we descend into the gullies of Jökultungur with hundreds of steaming hot springs and mud pools. There you can see fascinating views south to the Álftavatn area (Swan Lake) and the Mrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. In the afternoon we arrive at the Álftavatn Hut where we’ll overnight.

Elevation: 1,640 ft. or 500 m.     Walk approximately 5 hours (8.7 miles or 14 km.)

line

Day 6

We hike by the foot of the green conic volcano of Stórasúla before entering the black deserts of Mælifellssandur. Upon arriving at the Botnar Hut we can take a short hike to the magnificent Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon.

Elevation: 867 ft. or 267 m.     Walk approximately 7 hours (9 miles or 14.5km)

line

Day 7

We continue up and down into small valleys and gullies in Emstur, with the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier only a couple of kilometres away. We are also offered great views over Eyjafjallajökull and the much smaller Tindfjallajökull glaciers. We cross the Pröngá River before we reach the woods of Pórsmörk. We spend the night in Þórsmörk Hut.

Walk approximately 6 - 7 hours (13.5 miles or 22km)

line

Day 8

Today it is the hardest but also one of the most rewarding days of our trek. We’re now hiking the famous fimmvörðuháls trek, and we begin with a climb up over a small ridge with astonishing views back over the valley and glacier tongues reaching down from the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. We climb up to 3600 ft. and pass between the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers before descending along the river laced with 33 different waterfalls. The last one is the majestic Skógarfoss which is 197 ft. high. We reach Skógar where we stay the night in a hotel.

Walk approximately 7 hours (12.5 miles)

Day 9

After breakfast we bus back to Reykjavik and our celebratory dinner!

Day 10
